2.  Teachings opens in The Factory at Gallery Connexion Nov 17
 
Join the Fredericton Native Friendship Centre on Thursday, November 17 for the exhibition opening of Teachings: Contemporary Takes on Aboriginal Traditional Works in The Factory, located within Gallery Connexion, from 6-8pm.
 
Teachings will feature work from established indigenous artists Tara Francis and Shane Perly-Dutcher as well as work from students in the Wolokehkitimok Good Place of Learning Program at Leo Hayes High School.
 
The opening reception will include refreshments, and a fundraising raffle with proceeds going to the Native Friendship
Centre. Non-perishable food donations will also be accepted to the Native Friendship Centre food bank.
 
The Fredericton Native Friendship Centre is a non-profit community organization dedicated to improving the lives of urban aboriginals through programs focusing on healing, life-skills building, and traditional teachings.
 
The Factory is a multidisciplinary room located within Gallery Connexion, Fredericton’s artist-run centre, 440 York Street in the Chestnut Complex.
 
Gallery Connexion’s mandate is to expose Fredericton and its surrounding area to contemporary and experimental art practices, including performance, literary arts, musical arts, and interdisciplinary work.
 
The Teachings: Contemporary Takes on Aboriginal Traditional Works exhibition runs until December 13, 2011.

3.  Kim Vose Jones Artist Tour and Talk Nov 17 at Beaverbrook Art Gallery
 
Thursday, November 17  7-8:30pm
 
Artist's Tour and Talk with Kim Vose Jones -- A Farewell to Flesh is a site-responsive immersive sculptural installation,
consisting of multi- component white biomorphic sculptures and small islands created from rock salt.  
 
Each of the large fibre, plastic and glass objects is designed to work together as an intertwined group, evoking the systems
and spatial relationships which form a living organism’s necessary context.  
 
The salt is formed into a topographical map inspired by the unique shape of the gallery, with simple pathways cleared
through the installation for people to meander along.
 
The work occupies various levels and spaces within the gallery.  Some works are hung while others are obscured or nestled
low. There are highly concentrated areas with clusters of objects reflecting many stages of liminality.

4.  Spanish Embassy Film Series Presents Camino Nov 17
 
The Spanish Embassy, the UNB Libraries, and the Dept. of Culture & Language Studies present the award-winning Spanish film, Camino, winner of an impressive 6 Goya awards in 2008 (equivalent to the Oscars in Spain .  This free public screening  will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at 7pm at the Milham Room, Harriet Irving Learning Commons, UNB Campus (free  parking )
 
Made in 2008, Camino is a controversial film directed by Javier Fesser and based on the true story of Alexia González-Barros, a girl who died from spinal cancer at fourteen and is currently in process of canonization. This film directly accuses  the Opus Dei organization of exploiting the illness of a young girl.  Critics say the film “intertwines melodrama, horror and animation in outrageous new ways to enrich us with what is one of the most powerful Spanish films of the decade.”
 
Run time: 138 min
 
The film is presented in Spanish with English subtitles and will be briefly introduced by Dr. Jasmina Terzioska (St. Thomas University .  All are welcome.

5.  York Sunbury Historical Society presents Historic Talk Nov 17
 
Thursday, November 17, 2011! 7:30pm at Government House
 
In a talk entitled New Brunswickers in the American Civil War,  speaker Greg Marquis will discuss what motivated men from New Brunswick to fight in the Civil War, mainly for the North, and how this involvement was viewed 'back home.’  Examples
will include individuals from central New Brunswick, including Sarah Emma Edmonds, who served in a Union volunteer regiment disguised as a man. The talk will conclude by discussing the larger significance of New Brunswickers' military  involvement in this conflict.
 
Members of the public are welcome.  Donations of snacks for the reception after the presentation would be much
appreciated.
 
6.  Cinema Politica presents Life And Debt Nov 18
 
Please join us on Friday November 17 at 7pm at Conserver House, 180 St. John Street, Fredericton, for a screening of Life
and Debt, a documentary by Stephanie Black (US / 2001 / 80 min / English . This is that rare breed of documentary that
succeeds in both educating and informing its viewers on a complex topic while also entertaining them from start to finish.
Thanks in part to the stunning natural beauty of Jamaica, the film is a cinematographic gem. It explores the inherent
contradictions of neo-liberal ideas of development by examining the effects of structural adjustment policies on the idyllic
island.  Sadly, for most Jamaicans, the paradise tourists enjoy is more like a living hell.  Critics said of the film that it is a:
“very powerful weapon in the arsenal of the global movement for a more equitable economic order.”

Richard Lemm‚s recent books are Burning House (poetry  and Shape of Things to Come (short fiction . He is the author of Milton Acorn: In Love and Anger, a biography of Canada's "People's Poet."  Recently, he was a writer in residence in Tasmania and a visiting professor in Cairo.  He lives in Charlottetown, where he teaches creative writing and literature at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Fredericton writer jo griffith will be reading from her novel underway during NaNoWriMo, Canada’s National Novel Writing Month (www.nanowrimo.org/en/dashboard  .  In her day job, jo griffith works as a professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at St. Thomas University under the name Josephine Savarese.  In the summer of 2011, jo attended the Sage Hill Intensive Writing Experience in Lumsden, Saskatchewan where she had the privilege of studying with poet Susan Stenson and fiction writer and poet John Lent.
 
11.  Festival international du cinéma francophone en Acadie Nov 20^23

12.  Music on the Hill presents free noon^hour recital with David Rogosin Nov 21  
 
Join David Rogosin, highly regarded performer, adjudicator and clinician, for a solo piano recital featuring the works of Scarlatti, Haydn, and Canadian composers Ann Southam and François Morel.  This free noon-hour performance will take place on Monday, November 21 at Memorial Hall, UNB Fredericton campus, at 12pm.
 
Pianist David Rogosin has performed across Canada, the American midwest, the Caribbean and France. His first solo CD,
Incandescence, featured the music of Messiaen, Brahms, Bartók and Dallapicolla, and garnered much praise and frequent
airplay on CBC.  A passionate teacher and exponent of new music, Rogosin's lecture recitals on 20th-century composers
have been heard at national and international conferences and have been extremely well-received by the public.

Since 2005, Dr. Rogosin has also been chair of Mount Allison University's Performing Arts Series, presenting varied concerts
of classical music, folk, world music and jazz, as well as classical and modern dance.

13.  Multicultural Youth Film Screening WelcoMe / Bien venue and photography exhibit Nov 21
 
The Multicultural Association of Fredericton Inc. (MCAF  invites everyone to the official launch of film WelcoMe / Bien venue
and the photography exhibit Community on Monday November 21, 7-8:30pm at Théâtre Bernard-Poirier, Centre
communautaire Sainte-Anne, 715 Priestman St.
 
WelcoMe / Bien venue, is an 11-minute bilingual documentary featuring immigrant youth from diverse cultural backgrounds
and different immigration categories. The film provides a space for youth to share their perspectives on what it is like to be a
newcomer youth and how to cope with and overcome stereotypes around immigrant and refugee youths in their community.
 
The MCAF Newcomer Youth Photography Club presents its photography exhibit titled Community.  This will be a showcase
of the work of 13 newcomer youth exploring the theme of community.

Fifteen-year-old Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts, Jane Eyre  has two big ambitions: to save his parents’ marriage via carefully plotted intervention and to lose his virginity before his next birthday. Worried that his mom (the always delightful Sally Hawkins, Made in Dagenham, Jane Eyre  is having an affair with New Age weirdo Graham (a hilarious Paddy Considine, Hot Fuzz, The Bourne Ultimatum , Oliver monitors his parents’ sex life by charting the dimmer switch in their bedroom. He also forges suggestive love letters from Mom to Dad. His love interest Jordana (a spirited performance by newcomer Yasmin Paige  is refreshingly complicated; a self-professed pyromaniac, she supervises Oliver’s journal writing – especially the bits about her. When necessary, she orders him to cross things out.
 
Based on Joe Dunthorne’s acclaimed novel, Submarine is a captivating coming-of-age story with an offbeat edge.
 
15.  National Arts Centre Orchestra at the Fredericton Playhouse Nov 22
 
On November 22 at 7:30pm, The Fredericton Playhouse will be filled with the incredible sounds of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra. Created in 1969, the Orchestra has performed worldwide, including 118 concerts in cities across Canada.
This month, the tradition of engaging communities continues with the orchestra’s eighth visit to the Atlantic region.
 
Past participants in the NAC’s Summer Music Institute’s Young Artists Program, conductor Julian Kuerti returns with debuting pianist Jan Lisiecki in Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto No. 20, a work that even Beethoven admired and often performed.
Kuerti also leads a world premiere by NAC Award-winning composer John Estacio as well as Brahms’s glorious First Symphony, a work on which the composer toiled for decades.  At its premiere, Brahms’s masterpiece was hailed by critics as “Beethoven’s Tenth” and is now celebrated as a jewel of the orchestral repertoire.
 
Members of the NAC’s Institute for Orchestral Studies, a string quintet of young artists preparing for professional careers, will also perform alongside NAC Orchestra musicians that evening.  Join us for an awe-inspiring performance by an exceptional ensemble of classical musicians who continue to draw accolades both abroad and at home.

16.  Live at the Joyce with the Richard Page Nov 24
 
Each Thursday, the James Joyce Pub will be offering free live music in Blues, Jazz, Contemporary, Celtic etc. On Thursday, November 24 beginning at 6pm, join Ottawa saxophonist Richard Page.  Richard studied jazz at Mohawk College where he was awarded the Noreen and Phil Nimmons Memorial Scholarship twice, in 2005 and 2007.
 
Between 2004 and 2008, Richard was a member of the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band where he quickly became one of the All Star’s featured soloists. In July 2007, the All Stars undertook a three-week European tour, appearing at the Vienne Jazz Festival in France and the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
 
Throughout his career, Richard has performed with many of North America’s top jazz artists including JUNO award winner David Braid, among many others.  Richard will be joined by Nova Scotia jazz guitarist Amy Brandon.
 
17.  Terry Graff The Art of Looking at Art public talk Nov 24
 
You are cordially invited to attend a talk by Terry Graff, Curator of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, on the topic The Art of Looking at Art at Government House on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 7pm.  The talk, which is open to the public at no charge, will focus on what the viewer can bring to the experience of looking at artwork.
 
This event is being held in conjunction with an art exhibit celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Fredericton Art Club.  The exhibit consists of a broad range of art assembled by its members and is presently on display at Government House until December 2, 2011.  A warm welcome is extended to all!
 
18.  Comic couple The Funny Ones will keep you in stitches at the Playhouse Nov 25
 
The Fredericton Playhouse will be bursting with laughter on Friday, November 25 when one of Canada’s favourite comedy duos hits the stage with an arsenal of over two decades of their greatest hits. The Funny Ones is the latest live comedy offering from Jenny Parsons and Steve Morel, two professional comedians who have become proficient in the art of being silly together in life and in love.
 
The Funny Ones is about their real-life relationship; about being a husband and wife while doing comedy for a living, and the comedians who have inspired them along the way: Lucy & Ricky, Burns & Allen, and even Palin & Bush. It’s like stand-up with songs, but WAY cooler.  When Jenny and Steve moved to the countryside four years ago, they met the “raw milk farmer”, the “mushroom guy” and the “couple who grew the garlic.”  As professional comedians, and who were new to the area, they soon became known as “the funny ones.”  And so a title for their latest touring show was born.
 
The combination of Steve’s musical concoctions and Jenny’s comic fearlessness make for an evening you aren’t soon to forget. What’s more, Jenny performs magic tricks throughout the show that would make most trained magicians sweat!
Together, they perform sketches such as Abbott and Costello’s Who’s on First routine, but through the eyes of characters Hannibal and Clarice of Silence of the Lambs fame. They title this soon-to-be-classic piece Who Did You Eat First?

Branch Out Productions presents A Rented Christmas directed by Ben Harrison November 25-26 at the Nashwaaksis Middle School Theatre at 7pm. Tickets are available at The Regent Mall guest services desk, online http://www.branchoutproductions.weebly.com or via email branchoutproductions@live.ca.

Featuring a fantastic multi generational cast, B.O.P's first production in Fredericton tells the story of wealthy businessman John Dale, who hasn't enjoyed a "real Christmas" for years.  So, on the spur of the moment, he decides to "rent" a Christmas from Anne Weston, who owns the local rent shop.  Anne is at first flustered with the requirements: a tree with presents, Christmas carols and also a wife and five children.  Anne feels she has solved the problem of a Christmas family by calling the actors' guild.  But the young actors come down with the measles so she turns to the local orphanage.  When the guild can't locate a "mother," Anne steps in to play the role herself.
 
Based on the short story by J. Lillian Vandervere, the story of how John Dale’s rented Christmas turns into a new life for all concerned makes this a warm story for the holiday season.
 
B.O.P will be hosting a silent auction during show times to supplement the cost of tickets for those who could not otherwise have access to the theatre.

21.  Rooted/uprooted and Mirimichi 1953 open in Annex Gallery Nov 29
 
Rooted/uprooted and Miramichi 1953 in the Playhouse Annex Gallery November 29- January 16, 2012.
 
Gallery Connexion’s Annex Gallery invites you to the opening reception of Rooted/uprooted by Linda Kelly and Miramichi 1953 by Rachael Flett at the Playhouse at 686 Queen Street on Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 5-6:45pm.  Both exhibitions run until January 16, 2012.
 
Rooted/uprooted is a selection of drawings by Linda Kelly that depict trees from the area close to her home in Fredericton.  The aged maples are on her family farm and predate her grandfather.  The elms are nearer to her home and, though much younger, recently succumbed to the elm disease that has spread outward from city center over the past several years.
 
“I think we all share a love for the presence and companionship of trees,” Kelly said.
 
Miramichi 1953 is a collection of photographs by Rachael Flett using black and white film initially created with images of women from the 1950’s.  The negatives were hand-processed in a traditional darkroom.  Racheal began experimenting by shooting different models in various settings.
 
The Annex Gallery is an initiative between Gallery Connexion and the Fredericton Playhouse to provide a juried exhibition space for Gallery Connexion members and for the Playhouse to include programmed exhibition in its galleries.

Anyone who knows anything at all about opera knows something about Carmen.  It has been called the perfect opera, and there is much justification for this accolade. There is not an ounce of fat or padding in this opera - every number, every moment is essential, telling, crucial, perfectly set.  Tchaikovsky proclaimed Carmen “a masterpiece in every sense of the word” and predicted – correctly, as it turned out – that it would become the world’s most popular opera.  In Paris, by 1904 (29 years after its premiere there , it had seen one thousand performances, and by 1938 (Bizet’s centennial year , the city had chalked up its second thousand.

23.  TNB presents The Gifts of the Magi Dec 1^4 at the Fredericton Playhouse
 
It's Christmas in New York, but for two young lovers the prospects are bleak. Will parting with their most precious possession solve their gift-giving dilemma? What will happen to cheerful bum Soapy's plan for an unusual winter getaway? And with all this hustle and bustle, will newsboy Willy find any warmth and giving in the cold impersonal city?
 
“O. Henry’s The Gifts of the Magi still has tremendous resonance with a modern audience,” says TNB Artistic Producer Caleb Marshall who directs the production. This heartfelt musical telling of O. Henry’s work is sure to put audiences in the Christmas spirit.”
 
Playing the couple at the heart of The Gifts of the Magi are Patrick Cook (Jimmy, Chairmaker, TNB 2004  and Jacqueline Thair (Mary, It’s a Wonderful Life, TNB 2009 . Veteran New Brunswick character actor Sheldon Davis returns for his fourth TNB production having previously appeared in Kringle’s Window (1996 , Jasper Station (2003  and Dear Santa (2003 . They are joined by Vaughn Harris, Robert Yeretch and New Brunswick native Martha Farrell (Elaine, The Graduate, TNB 2006 .
 
The Gifts of the Magi runs December 1-4 at The Fredericton Playhouse with performances at 7:30pm Thursday –Saturday and 2pm Saturday and Sunday.

Each year the New Brunswick Summer Music Festival brings the best in classical chamber music to Fredericton, performed by Canada's most talented artists.
 
To support the Festival, a number of years ago Bruno Bobak generously donated the original and a limited edition of 100 prints of his work, Blissfield Pool.  We are selling raffle tickets on one of the few remaining prints we have in our collection.
This is a gorgeous scene of a fishing pool in the Miramichi - a perfect gift for anglers, Miramichi-ers and all Bobak fans.

Sainte Anne’s Court will be hosting a Craft Bazaar and Bake Sale, November 30, from 2-4pm. We will have tables and are
inviting local Craftspeople to sell their wares to our residents and guests.  We have over 120 residents in this beautiful
independent retirement living facility above the Fredericton Golf Club Road on 81 Duncan Lane.

2.  New Brunswick Art Bank call for submissions Dec 9 deadline (extended  
 
The New Brunswick Art Bank is inviting submissions from New Brunswick visual artists for the 2011-2012 Acquisitions
Program.
 
The Acquisitions Program purchases contemporary works of art by New Brunswick visual artists for display in government
buildings.  Every two years, a jury of artists and art professionals selects artwork to be purchased.
 
Artists who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants who have resided in New Brunswick for 12 consecutive months prior
to the application deadline and who pay personal income taxes in New Brunswick are eligible to apply for the program.  
Artwork must have been produced during the past two years (between January 2009 and November 2011  and must be
suitable for display in government buildings.  
 
The extended deadline to receive submissions is December 9, 2011.  Application forms and guidelines are available at

3.  GENERATION ART… IMAGINE!
 
The Michaëlle Jean Foundation and EQ3 have partnered to provide a national platform for young Canadians to express
themselves on social issues, to share their creative vision of a better community with all Canadians, and to acquire mentors,
industry contacts and transferable artistic and entrepreneurial skills.  
 
What it involves
A nationwide contest: Creative young people, aged 15 to 30, are invited to design and submit original artwork by January 10,
2012 around the theme “Imagine…. a Better Community” to generationart@eq3.com. Winning entries will be selected by
region and become part of a limited edition Generation Art product line available for sale at EQ3 stores across Canada in the
spring of 2012. One hundred per cent of the proceeds raised will be reinvested in youth initiatives, through the Michaëlle
Jean Foundation. Winners will be awarded the Generation Art product featuring their winning design, a  200 EQ3 gift
certificate and have the opportunity to spend individual time with EQ3 consultants!   10
 
Exhibits and Blogs: To raise awareness about issues of concern to all young Canadians, Generation Art will provide a
variety of platforms where participants’ creativity will be displayed. A virtual exhibit will be unveiled on FMJF’s website,
www.fmjf.ca, showcasing the creative vision of a better Canada of all participants. Video commentary and blogs featuring
young Canadians taking on social issues and solutions will also be available.  The exhibit, blogs and video messages will
provide a rich tapestry of artwork and perspectives that showcase the unique contribution young people can make to a better
Canada.
 
Workshops and Mentorship: EQ3 will welcome young Canadians to a series of three workshops focussed on working as a
team to create art reflecting the project’s theme, creativity in the world of industrial design, and selling and marketing artwork.
Those unable to attend the workshops in person will be able to participate virtually through online videos.  During all stages
of the workshops, seasoned industrial design professionals will be on hand to provide mentorship support for participants.

4.  Call for proposals – Charlotte Street Arts Centre
 
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre is seeking proposals for the Charlotte Glencross Gallery.  
 
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre “opens the doors of creative expression to all,” and invites professional artists, emerging
artists, multicultural artists and amateur artists, as well as students to apply.
 
The selections committee will meet to review the proposals after the submission deadline: January 13, 2012. Applicants will
be considered for exhibitions beginning May 2012 through to 2013.
 
Requirements:
•  A 250-word artist statement/ proposal for exhibition  
•  An arts CV (max 3 pages  or biography  
•  10 images of work (JPEGS  on a CD with accompanying image list that specifies titles of work, media used and
dimensions of work

5.  Theatre New Brunswick to partner with NotaBle Acts on new play development
 
Theatre New Brunswick and NotaBle Acts are calling on emerging and established New Brunswick playwrights to submit
their one-act plays for New Voices.  This province-wide call for short plays offers playwrights the opportunity to have their
New Brunswick stories professionally produced as Opening Acts on the TNB Main Stage in the 2012-13 season.  
 
Submissions must be based on a true New Brunswick story past or present.  They may incorporate intimate and domestic
themes or subjects large in historic scope.  Submission deadline is January 15, 2012
