1. Cinema Politica presents Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood Jan 6
Cinema Politica films are screened at Conserver House, 180 Saint John St, on Fridays starting in January until mid April 2012 beginning at 7pm.
Friday, January 6, 7pm
Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood
Conserver House, 180 Saint John St., Fredericton.
Consuming Kids throws desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. Drawing on the insights of health care professionals, children's advocates, and industry insiders, the film focuses on the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world.
Post-film discussion with Biljana Stevanovski, UNB Psychology. The films are free. Donations encouraged. Cinema Politica is supported by UNB's Dept. of Culture and Language Studies.

January 9
Take Shelter
Director: Jeff Nichols
Cast: Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain, Shea Whigham
Run Time: 120 minutes
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Language: English
A Special Presentation at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival®, Take Shelter is a darkly compelling domestic drama-cum-psychological thriller set in the rural American heartland. Propelled by the mesmerizing performance of Michael Shannon (Machine Gun Preacher, Revolutionary Road) as a young husband and father plagued by apocalyptic visions, writer-director Jeff Nichols crafts a haunting and powerful film.
Curtis LaForche (Shannon) lives in small town Ohio with his loving wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain, The Debt, Tree of Life), and their hearing-impaired six-year-old daughter. A solid, taciturn working class man, Curtis seems to have everything a modest man could wish for. When he starts having nightmares about ominous black clouds and an impending storm that threatens disaster for his family and small community, he does his best to push these visions from his mind. Keeping his turmoil to himself, Curtis starts channelling his anxiety into obsessively building a storm shelter in his backyard. His increasingly irrational and inexplicable behaviour soon imperils his job and the family finances, but the resulting strain on his marriage and tension within his community can’t compare with Curtis’s fear of what his dreams may truly signify.
Take Shelter is a disquieting tale for our times that is both deeply unsettling as it is unforgettable.

8. New Exhibition at Connexion Subverts Stereotypes of Gender and Sex Work opens Jan 12
Gallery Connexion is pleased to announce the opening reception of Nathalie Daoust’s Tokyo Hotel Story on Thursday, January 12 at 7pm.
Nathalie Daoust's Tokyo Hotel Story is a series of photographs exploring female sexuality and the subversion of gender stereotypes. After spending several months in Alpha, one of the biggest S&M "love hotels" in Japan, Daoust photographed 39 women of all ages in their private rooms, surrounded by the specialist equipment and dressed in the regalia that helps define their trade of Dominatrix. The exhibition will feature some photographs in 3D.
Daoust’s goal is to provide insight into the concept of women as dominant beings. She believes numerous challenges still exist in terms of confronting deep-rooted stereotypes of gender-roles, not only in Japan, but the world as well.
Daoust will give an artist talk at Gallery Connexion on January 14 at 2pm. Salon Connex, an open forum critical discussion about the work, will be held February 26 at the Charlotte Street Art Centre. The exhibition runs until March 2.
Gallery Connexion is Fredericton’s only artist-run-centre. Located at 440 York St in the Chestnut Complex.
Gallery Connexion’s mandate is to present controversial and thought provoking contemporary artwork to the Fredericton community.

What’s involved? I take pictures that I then use to draw portraits from. I’m looking for women of ALL sizes, shapes, colours and ages, including nursing moms.
My goal is to paint personality and presence of real women. What makes you, you? A smile, little feet, amazing eyes, freckles, a scar, your love of jewellery, a birthmark, a great rack, playing piano, granny panties? I don’t want anybody to feel shy or ashamed, but rather I want to celebrate different body types of women and the fact that we are all amazing, despite pregnancy, breastfeeding, scars etc. I am looking to showcase the everyday and seemingly ordinary women.
Questions welcome contact Jody Denny at (506) 328-9288 | jody.denny@bellaliant.net
