1.  Theatre UNB presents Two OneBAct Plays Nov 30BDec 3

Theatre UNB presents an evening of madness, music and men in suits at Memorial Hall. Two one-act plays will be performed as a double bill from November 30 to December 3: Arthur Kopit’s absurdist tragicomedy Chamber Music and Jean Giraudoux’s satirical fantasy The Apollo of Bellac.
Set in the 1940s, both plays are fascinating tales of self-invention. In Chamber Music, eight institutionalized women believe they are feminist icons such as Amelia Earhart, Gertrude Stein or Joan of Arc. Conspiring to protect the women’s section from attack by the elusive men’s ward, they each reveal their mysterious motives and quirks. Joan’s armour may be rusty and Amelia’s plane now a children’s playground, but in their chaotic struggle to save their lives, what was initially amusing can quickly become terrifying.

The Apollo of Bellac takes a sunnier view of the gender divide, as a shy young woman is taught how to get whatever she wants from any man, be it a job, a dance or a diamond, just by uttering four simple words. Set in Paris, in a fanciful “office of inventions,” Giraudoux’s play is a witty meditation on beauty, power and male vanity. It paints a wry portrait of a corporate world that can be transformed with the right words and a smidgen of charm.

Directed by John Ball, designed by Mike Johnston, and produced and performed by the students of Drama 2170, the production features live music, colourful period costumes and plenty of surprises. The show begins at 8pm, with tickets available at the door for  10 or  6 for students.

2.  TNB presents The)Gifts)of)the)Magi Dec 1B4 at the Fredericton Playhouse

It's Christmas in New York, but for two young lovers the prospects are bleak. Will parting with their most precious possession solve their gift-giving dilemma?  What will happen to cheerful bum Soapy's plan for an unusual winter getaway? And with all this hustle and bustle, will newsboy Willy find any warmth and giving in the cold impersonal city?

“O. Henry’s The Gifts of the Magi still has tremendous resonance with a modern audience,” says TNB Artistic Producer Caleb Marshall who directs the production. This heartfelt musical telling of O. Henry’s work is sure to put audiences in the Christmas spirit.”

Playing the couple at the heart of The Gifts of the Magi are Patrick Cook (Jimmy, Chairmaker, TNB 2004) and Jacqueline Thair (Mary, It’s a Wonderful Life, TNB 2009). Veteran New Brunswick character actor Sheldon Davis returns for his fourth TNB production having previously appeared in Kringle’s Window (1996), Jasper Station (2003) and Dear Santa (2003). They are joined by Vaughn Harris, Robert Yeretch and New Brunswick native Martha Farrell (Elaine, The Graduate, TNB 2006).

The Gifts of the Magi runs December 1-4 at The Fredericton Playhouse with performances at 7:30pm Thursday–Saturday and 2pm Saturday and Sunday.

4.  Fashion Design exhibit Illusion opens Dec 2 at The Gallery

The Gallery at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design is proud to present Illusion, our first two-person alumni exhibition of the 2011-2012 academic year, opening on Friday, December 2 from 4:30-6:30pm.  

Enter a miniature world, accessorized by history, fantasy, and wearable art, for a certain demographic.  Experience crossovers from different eras and movements: Victorian, Steampunk, and burlesque are rolled into a delightful, intriguing and beguiling exhibition.  The Gallery beckons with industrial references: metal, grommets, and chains that dance alongside lace, velvet and Victorian femininity - and masculinity!  This is a show that is sure to surprise and delight.

Accompanying four sets and 14 ensembles, the Gallery space will be enhanced by fashion photography taken throughout the city by Jeff Crawford.

This is a very special exhibition for the Gallery created by two award-winning graduates of the Diploma of Fine Craft, Fashion Design, at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.  Tracy Austin is currently the Fashion Studio technician at NBCCD, and a freelance artist in Fredericton.  Sherry Kinnear is a costume designer, and is Head of Wardrobe with Theatre New Brunswick.

Visitors to the Annual Fashion Catwalk Extravaganza may have seen the intricate offerings of both Kinnear and Austin on the runway, and will again this coming spring as Tracy Austin prepares for her moment in the spotlight in April 2012.  Kinnear has also participated as a designer for the annual Red Dress Gala for The Heart Truth Awareness Campaign for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, most recently in 2011 at the Moncton Casino featuring special guest, Jeannie Beker, an icon in the Canadian Fashion Industry.

The show will continue until January 18, 2012.

5.  Fredericton Society of Artists Holiday Harvest exhibition opens Dec 2

Fredericton Society of Artists presents Holiday Harvest, an exhibition and sale of recent works by Society members.  The exhibition opens at UNB Art Centre on December 2 at 5pm with a public reception.  Holiday Harvest runs until December 18.

The Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9am-4pm and will also be open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5pm during this exhibition.

The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, UNB Fredericton.  Admission is free.  Everyone is welcome.


6.  The Fiddler The Tenor and The Pianist Dec 2

Wilmot United Church presents a Christmas Concert on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 7pm. The concert features fiddler Kathleen Gorey-McSorley, Canadian tenor Derrick Paul Miller and pianist Carolyn Holyoke.  Special guests are the members of The Lintuhtine Youth Choir conducted by Helen Morag McKinnon and accompanied by Lynn Mills.

7.  Cinema Politica presents The)Women)Of)Brukman)Dec 2

Please join us on Friday, December 2 at 7pm at Conserver House, 180 St. John St., Fredericton, for a screening of the 2008 documentary The Women of Brukman, a 52-minute award-winning documentary by Quebec-based director Isaac Isitan about the takeover of factories by workers in Argentina.

During the 2001 economic collapse in Argentina, the seamstresses at Brukman’s clothing factory took over the operation the owners had abandoned.  They reorganized it on a self-management model, without a doubt the most inspiring of the many new economic experiments in that country.  The name Brukman’s went from being a symbol of worker exploitation to being a site of revolutionary labour participation – all workers, no bosses.

This film is co-sponsored by the UNB/STU University Women’s Centre and the UNB Women’s Studies Program.  Cinema Politica screenings are always followed by discussion about the film. Screenings are free but donations are welcome to pay for Cinema Politica Membership.  All are invited.

8.  Gallery 78 presents three new exhibitions opening Dec 2

Three new exhibitions open at Gallery 78 December 2

William Forrestall’s intricate still life paintings sparkle and hum – like fine crystal.  Forrestall’s egg tempera paintings capture the moment as if the world has stood still.  The atmosphere in these works is as palpable as any of the objects - it glistens and shimmers as it suspends the objects in time as well as space.  No other painter creates and captures stillness with quite the same intensity of “the moment.”  All of this is evident in Forrestall’s newest exhibition New and Familiar.

Kristianne LeBreton’s exhibition Unforgotten speaks to the significance of remembering.  Her urns, created in the spirit of honouring the special elements of life and death and of each individual, show a heartfelt appreciation for life.  Her jewellery, which incorporates found metal objects that may have otherwise been discarded, also speaks to the imbuing of significance we often place in objects.  Unforgotten is LeBreton’s first solo exhibition.  

Christmas Choice comes but once a year!  Gallery 78 presents its ever-popular small works exhibition Christmas Choice beginning December 2.  Many of the gallery’s favoured artists come together once again for a delightful selection of small paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures.

10.  Book Binding 101 with Denise Rowe Dec 3 at Memorial Hall

A small (for large thoughts) coptic journal.

In this workshop we’ll learn some basic book making techniques, such as building a book block, finding the grain of paper, piercing, sewing, drilling, designing the perfect cover.

The finished product, hand made by you, will be a perfect little journal to carry everywhere with you.  Nothing extra is needed for this workshop…….unless you would like to bring a few personal embellishments for the cover - buttons, ribbons, photos, smallish baubles, etc.

11.  Poetic Prose Recital with Nancy Bauer and Nela Rio Dec 3

The Fredericton Chapter of the Ibero-American Academy of Poetry invites you to a Poetic Prose Recital in English and Spanish.  This event takes place at 2pm at the beautiful River Reading Room in the Fredericton Public Library, 12 Carleton St., Fredericton.

Both Nancy Bauer and Nela Rio will be reading Poetic Prose.  American poet Karen Volkman calls the poetic prose genre “a trickster of a form, full of leaps and wiles.”  Come and experience this poetry with us!  Perhaps you will be inspired!

12.  Bel Canto Singers of Fredericton Christmas Concert and Wassail Dec 3

The Bel Canto Singers of Fredericton, under the direction of Anne Sessa, present a concert of moving and beautiful Christmas music in Fredericton on Saturday, December 3.

The Bel Canto Singers, Fredericton’s premiere mixed voice chamber choir, has been delighting audiences for more than 30 years.  In addition to regular performances in Fredericton, they are often invited to perform outside the Fredericton area, most recently Amherst, Nova Scotia, Gagetown, Moncton and Woodstock.

There will be music for everyone; including selections from the Renaissance era, works by Eric Whittaker, Lauridsen and Vaughan Williams plus favourite carols and a seasonal sing-a-long.

The concert will be followed by the Wassail – a time to enjoy seasonal drink and great food provided by choir members.

Anne brings to the choir, her vast experience in choral performance. Anne was the founder / conductor of the Bower Hill Chorale which was often accompanied by the Pittsburgh Symphony.  She conducted the Seaglass Chorale, the Southern Maine Chorale and most recently the Greater Moncton Chorale.  Anne also works with the NB Choral Federation as a conductor and soloist.

Kathy Mac’s books of poems are The Hundefräulein Papers (2009) and Nail Builders Plan for Strength and Growth (2002), a finalist for the Governor General’s Award and winner of the Lampert Award.  In 2006, she received a SSHRC grant to marry her creative and analytical skills in a series of long poems on contemporary culture.  Neither side has sued for divorce, though they went through a lot of counselling. The children are beautiful, if wild; some of them will be published by Wolsack and Wynn in late 2012 in Romance, Porn, Pain and Complicity, which is billed as a collection of Cultural Studies essays.  Mac teaches Creative Writing and Women Writers at STU, where she is chair of the English Department.

Born in North Battleford, Robert Shiplett studied philosophy and psychology in both Saskatchewan and Montreal.  Working in both Canada and the US, he has lectured as a sessional, interned as a psychologist, developed software, and taught ESL and special-needs students.  He moved to Fredericton in 2009, where he is a poet, blogger, astronomer, and occasional Go player with more telescopes than guitars.  Interested in poetry and science without certainties, Shiplett’s poems draw on the flora of many regions; recent historical events; and multi-lingual sources in poetry, poesis and poetics (French, German, Russian and other).  www.logiquewerks.com | www.aule-browser.com

17.  Interactive Songwriters’ Circle Whose)Song)Is)It)Anyway? Dec 4

Whose Song Is It Anyway? is an interactive songwriters’ circle…turned inside out! This unique new show features acclaimed East Coast artists Chris Kirby (NL), Kim Wempe (NS), Tim Chaisson (PEI) and Andy Brown (NB).  Each artist will perform several recognizable songs…written by the other artists on stage.  The original story of the song will come from the original artist, but the focus will quickly become how that song affects the other artists.

Not only does this format give the audience a different perspective on the music they love, it also sheds a new light for the artists themselves – on their own songs! The learning process continues on stage for these songwriters, new versions of certain songs may emerge, and new collaborations are sure to surface – right in front of their fans.  It also gives the artists an occasion to visibly appreciate each other and their music, which the audience will no doubt find charming and endearing.

Let’s celebrate our East Coast artists – and let them celebrate each other!

Directed with crisp, confident strokes by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), it offers all the pleasures of tight plotting and international intrigue, but grounds them in conflicts that have been urgent for sixty years. The stakes here are life, death and the honour of a nation.

In 1997, three veterans of Israel’s secret service, the Mossad, return to a hero’s welcome. Rachel Singer (Mirren), is the lone woman. Her daughter has just written a book about the threesome’s most famous exploit: a 1965 operation that saw them hunt down and terminate a notorious Nazi war criminal in East Berlin. The book brings the episode back into the spotlight, but the attention makes Rachel’s fellow agent David (Ciarán Hinds, There Will Be Blood, Life During Wartime) uneasy. In one shocking scene, he takes a decisive action that suddenly puts the other agents at risk, and opens whole new questions.

Madden shifts briskly between these scenes and the time of the original assassination, when the young agents snuck into East Berlin to track down the war criminal. They aim to bring him back to justice in Israel, but the situation proves more volatile than planned. Still, the mission catapults them to hero status back home.

The Debt is as polished and professional as its secret agent characters, pulsing along at a thrilling clip. But there is a substantial moral dilemma at the heart of this film: should the truth ever be sacrificed for a story that inspires a nation?


20.  Dance Fredericton presents The)Nutcracker at the Playhouse Dec 7

Presented by Dance Fredericton and featuring guest artists Emily Grizzell and Yosuke Mino, soloist dancers with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The Nutcracker is a full-length ballet that showcases original choreography created for Dance Fredericton, elaborate costuming, and the classical score by Tchaikovsky.

This fairy tale ballet opens with the festive Victorian party scene on Christmas Eve in the Stahlbaum home and later follows Clara and the Nutcracker Prince on their journey to the Land of the Sweets.  In the Magical Kingdom they are feted with delightful dances from around the world, including the stunningly beautiful pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.  This timeless classic will delight audiences of all ages.

21.  Advent Carol Festival Dec 7

The 22nd  Annual Advent Carol Festival held each year at St. Paul’s United Church (corner George and York) will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:30pm.  Thirteen church and community choirs will present a program of new, as well as familiar, Christmas music.

This is a fundraiser for Fredericton food banks; a freewill offering will be received.


22.  STU Jazz Concert Dec 7

STU Jazz presents its first concert of the year on Wednesday evening, December 7 at 7:30pm in Kinsella Auditorium located in McCain Hall on the St. Thomas University campus.  Come and hear this exciting jazz ensemble perform some familiar and new jazz arrangements.

Under the direction of Don Bossé, STU Jazz will perform a variety of jazz selections including swing, Latin, rock, vocal and a few seasonal numbers.  This is a concert you won't want to miss.

23.  UNB Chorale, UNB Concert Band and UNB Strings perform Dec 7

A night of musical diversity awaits you as the UNB Chorale and UNB Concert Band, directed by Björn Runefors, present their Annual Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:30pm, Memorial Hall, UNB Fredericton.  Special guests this year are UNB Strings, under the direction of Jackson Wo.

In the form of a Swedish Lucia Procession the UNB Chorale will present madrigals, popular music, African music and Christmas music including a newly composed piece by UNB’s in-house composer Christian Bérubé. The choir ends with a different version of Handel’s Hallelujah chorus.

The UNB Concert Band will start with a Symphonic Celebration and takes you from works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Elliot Del Borgo and Vince Gassi to the Ultimate Christmas Sing-Along.

Finally, the strings will please your ears with music by Jean Sibelius, Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  Come and celebrate the joy of the Holiday Season!

25.  Fredericton Choral Society and choirs perform 100Bvoice chorus of Handel’s Messiah Dec 11

On Sunday, December 11, Fredericton Choral Society presents Handel's Messiah in a performance that will be more dramatic than ever.  The Fredericton Choral Society, Sussex Choral Society and Bethany Singers together form a 100-voice choir. With the Fredericton Chamber Orchestra they'll make the rafters ring at a venue new to FCS: Sunset Church on Clements Drive. And, for the first time in New Brunswick, a countertenor will perform the beloved alto solos.

Bjorn Runefors, director of the Fredericton Choral Society, will conduct the choir and orchestra. Sarah Hallyburton, the soprano soloist, performs extensively and teaches voice in Sussex. Andrew Pickett, countertenor, has performed in Britain, France and Canada, and is delighted to be singing in his home province. Owen McCausland, the tenor soloist, graduated from Saint John High School, and is finishing his third year of a vocal performance degree at Dalhousie University. David Steeves, an outstanding bass soloist, teaches voice and is director of the Sussex Choral Society.

The concert will end with a sing-along repeat of the Hallelujah chorus, a wonderful way to end what promises to be a very special evening.

Concert details: December 11 at 7.30pm at Sunset Church, 429 Clements Drive, Fredericton.

Tickets are: adults  20 | seniors  15 | students  10 | children under 12  5.  Tickets available from members of Fredericton Choral Society and Fredericton Chamber Orchestra, Westminster Books, and at the door.


26.  Limited edition prints for sale B Bobak and Patterson

Looking for a special Christmas gift?  The New Brunswick Summer Music Festival is selling signed limited edition prints to raise funds for our programs.

The prints are Bruno Bobak’s Blissfield Pool, and Freeman Patterson’s Shampers Bluff.

Each print is signed and numbered (unframed).  This is your chance to obtain a rare and lovely print for a wonderful holiday gift or to add to your collection. Only  100 each.

We are also selling raffle tickets on the Bobak print.  ONLY 100 tickets will be sold and are  5 each. Draw date is December 12.  Remember there aren’t many days left to get your tickets!

28.  Artist Studios for Rent at Gallery Connexion
Lonely? Cramped for space?  Gallery Connexion rents studio space to artists for the creation, production, and sharing of deas among different disciplines. There are presently two (2) artist studios/office spaces available for rent in Gallery Connexion.  The spaces average 170 square feet in size.  The monthly rental fee is  200, heat and lights included, with access to a shared tool room and a/v equipment.  24-hour access with a wheelchair accessible entrance by request. All studio rentals require a yearly lease.

Gallery Connexion's artist studios provide opportunities for artists to learn and share through informal contact with each other's practice as well as connect with the many exhibitions and activities that make Gallery Connexion an amazing artist-run centre and community hub.  New cafe on site too!
