Christmas @theplayhouse is proud to present Picture Perfect Christmas, the latest edition of Fredericton's favourite holiday show.  With a host of colourful characters, vibrant musical numbers, and a talented ensemble of Fredericton-based performers and musicians, audiences will be taken on a journey of discovery where the true meaning of Christmas is found and celebrated.  Running December 15-18 at The Fredericton Playhouse, Picture Perfect Christmas follows two people who strive for perfection, each in their own way. Filled with joy, laughter, redemption, and lots of music, it’s the perfect way to get your family into the Christmas spirit.

Directed by Tania Breen, and featuring original musical arrangements by award-winning composer/musician Michael Doherty, this production has something for everyone.  “We’re so thrilled to be working with another incredibly talented group of performers this year, new and old,” says Breen, “Their commitment and talent has definitely fuelled our creative energy in writing this show, and Michael Doherty’s new musical pieces support the story beautifully.”
 
Cast members have been hard at work in preparation for what has become a holiday tradition among local audiences.
Christmas @theplayhouse has enjoyed a long tenure in the capital city as one of Fredericton’s favourite Christmas shows.  This year marks the 10th edition of this holiday staple, and the creative team behind the production have been hard at work.

3.  Meet the Artists event at Canex Mall Dec 16

5.  Local SelfOTaught Artists Make Global Statements through exhibition, opening Dec 16

Self-expression and understanding the power of art is not for formally trained artists alone.  Local self-taught artists, Derek Davidson and Reilly, are paired together in an exhibition at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre that creatively addresses global crises.

Art asks something participatory of the viewer.  An active painter in the local arts scene, Davidson explains, “each stage involves an interpretation… the viewer interprets the released image.”  With regards to his work, Davidson says, “this show casts allegories on some problems that have scaled between local and global.”

Davidson has created acrylic and oil paintings for a body of work entitled …and Protect that illustrates his understanding of events such as the G8 summits and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. He asks us to consider, “Who protects what?”

Reilly describes her creative process as one of “creating environmentally sustainable art that conveys a sense of usefulness, evoking thought. Part of the journey is seeking out trash that is polluting our environment and remaking it into something that can be valued. Each piece is unique and has its own story to tell.”
 
The exhibition opens in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery, at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, on Friday, December 16 at 5pm.
All are welcome to attend and to enjoy beer tastings by our gracious sponsor, Picaroons.

The exhibition runs until January 31, 2012.

6.  Early Christmas O A Meditation in Music & Readings Dec 17

A short meditative celebration of the Christmas season through readings and carols from the early French, Elizabethan, German and Czech hymnals dating from the 7th-17th Centuries, and Canada’s beloved Huron Carol.

Featuring singers from the Women’s Voice Workshop, Angela Birdsell, Director, and guests: Nadia Francavilla, violin, Steven Peacock, classical guitar.

The session will be approximately 45 minutes in length.  Goodwill offering with proceeds to the Fredericton Food Bank.

7.  Bolshoi Ballet’s The Nutcracker Live at Empire Theatres Dec 18

8.  Fondation L'Envol musical Inc./Foundation Music Beneath my Wings Inc. Christmas Show Dec 18

"Fondation L'Envol musical Inc./Foundation Music Beneath my Wings Inc." and MIMI MUSIQUE music school under the creative artistic direction of Myriam Poitras are producing their 4th Annual Christmas Show entitled Les 12 voeux de papa Noël / Santa's 12 Wishes.  The show highlights the talent of many young students of the music school as well as those who are young at heart, from 5 to 75 years, and includes performers from both the Fredericton and Grand Falls regions.

The show will take place Sunday, December 18, 2pm (doors open at 1pm) at the Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne, 715 Priestman Street.  Tickets, available at the door, are  15 adults |  10 children under 11.

This event is the foundation's sole fundraising event.  Proceeds go towards helping students of MIMI MUSIQUE shoulder the cost of attending the Fredericton Music Festival.

Andrea Kikuchi lives in Saint John with her husband and two children.  Japan and the Police was published in The Tokyo Notice Board (2006); Lisa and The Time of the Greatest Quiet was published by Broken Jaw Press (2010).  Her novel-in-progress, Gaijin, is based on her experiences teaching in Japan.

Heather O'Connell has been published in Everyday Fiction and 365 Tomorrows, and is currently working on a couple of novels.  She teaches her students to wake up the stories in their minds and write them down.

Jeannie Chiasson is an elementary school teacher who hopes to publish her first children’s novel, And the Tower Came Tumbling Down in the near future.

Anne Leslie’s freelance articles have been published in Atlantic Progress, Dimensions Magazine, the Brunswick Business Journal and read on CBC Radio.  Flash fiction and postcard stories are her favourite forms of writing.

Charlotte Valliere lives with her companion cat in Saint John, where she is worksing on her first novel, Searching for Shunata, while making her way back to the things closest to her heart.

Michelle Monette, mother of three caring and creative young adults, teaches ESL at UNBSJ.  She writes stories about the Maritime places and people she has come to know best.

The River Girls writing group meet bi-monthly and often enjoy full-day writing retreats.  Besides the five featured readers, other members include: Andrea Quigley, Kim Bent, and Yolande House, who is currently in Korea teaching ESL.

10.  Live at the Met Don)Giovanni encore performance at Empire Theatres Dec 19

A series of live operas is broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City to movie theatres around the world and is carried by Empire Theatres. Next up is the encore presentation of Don Giovanni on Monday, December 19 beginning at 6:30pm, originally broadcast live on October 29.

11.  Meghan Smith Holiday Concert at Charlotte Street Arts Centre Dec 19

After a year that’s seen ECMA honours and a Juno award for Best New Artist, Meghan Smith will close 2011 with a December 19 show at The Charlotte Street Arts Center. Her remarkably fast moving career has seen the Halifax-via-London songstress play with some of Canada’s finest, including Chantal Kreviazuk and Sarah McLachlan. Smith also appeared on the soundtrack for instant cult classic film (500) Days Of Summer.  With a brand new holiday album now on sale, the singer is poised for a very festive return to the city.

12.  Symphony New Brunswick Annual Holiday Concert at the Fredericton Playhouse Dec 20

On Tuesday, December 20 at 7:30pm, Symphony New Brunswick's annual Christmas concert will be held at the Fredericton Playhouse.  Featuring a strong New Brunswick theme, the orchestra will be joined by both the Choeur Louisbourg and the Choeur Beausejour, under the direction of Monique Richard.  This promises to be a truly memorable evening with works by Handel, Faure, Berlioz and Anderson.

13.  Winging It: A Workshop on Improv Comedy Jan 3

Taught by Maddox Campbell, alumnus of Theatre UNB and NotaBle Acts Theatre company productions, and a graduate of The Second City conservatory program, this workshop will cover the basics of improv comedy and will be open to both newcomers and those with experience in improv and theatre. The workshop will be four hours long and allow all participants some performance time.

Registration cost is  10.

5.  Fredericton Choral Society and Choirs Perform 100-voice Chorus of Handel’s Messiah Dec 11

On Sunday, December 11, Fredericton Choral Society presents Handel's Messiah in a performance that will be more dramatic than ever.  The Fredericton Choral Society, Sussex Choral Society and Bethany Singers together form a 100-voice choir. With the Fredericton Chamber Orchestra they'll make the rafters ring at a venue new to FCS: Sunset Church on Clements Drive. And, for the first time in New Brunswick, a countertenor will perform the beloved alto solos.

Bjorn Runefors, director of the Fredericton Choral Society, will conduct the choir and orchestra. Sarah Hallyburton, the soprano soloist, performs extensively and teaches voice in Sussex. Andrew Pickett, countertenor, has performed in Britain, France and Canada, and is delighted to be singing in his home province. Owen McCausland, the tenor soloist, graduated from Saint John High School, and is finishing his third year of a vocal performance degree at Dalhousie University. David Steeves, an outstanding bass soloist, teaches voice and is director of the Sussex Choral Society.

The concert will end with a sing-along repeat of the Hallelujah chorus, a wonderful way to end what promises to be a very special evening.

6.  French movie: Starbuck at Empire Theatres on Monday, Dec 12

The main character David Wozniak is a perpetual adolescent who discovers that, as a sperm donor, he has fathered 533 children. David, who works as a deliveryman for a butcher shop, is being pursued by thugs because he owes them money.
The plot thickens as Davis is advised that more than 100 of his offspring are trying to force the fertility clinic to reveal the true identity of "Starbuck,” the pseudonym he used when donating sperm.  Add to the mix, his girlfriend Valérie, pregnant with his child but who doesn't feel that he is mature enough to be a father.

This comedy with Patrick Huard will be shown on Monday, December 12 at 7pm at Empire Theatres, in French without English subtitles. Tickets sold only at Empire Theatres.  Classified General admission but not recommended for young children.

8.  Silver Wave NB Shorts screening at Cedar Tree Café Dec 14

Four NB Short Films, screened last month at the Silver Wave Film Festival in Fredericton, will be screened again on Wednesday, December 14 at 7pm at the Cedar Tree Café, 418 Queen Street in Fredericton. Seating is limited and  10 tickets will be sold at the door.

12.  Performing Arts NB closing its doors Dec 31, 2011

Due to a series of deep cuts to our operational funding from the Arts Development Branch (Dept. of Wellness, Culture & Sport), we regrettably inform our members, colleagues and associates that Performing Arts NB (PANB) will officially cease operations and close its doors as of December 31, 2011.

13.  Artist Studios for Rent at Gallery Connexion

Lonely?  Cramped for space?  Gallery Connexion rents studio space to artists for the creation, production, and sharing of ideas among different disciplines. There are presently two (2) artist studios/office spaces available for rent in Gallery Connexion.  The spaces average 170 square feet in size.  The monthly rental fee is  200, heat and lights included, with access to a shared tool room and a/v equipment.  24-hour access with a wheelchair accessible entrance by request. All studio rentals require a yearly lease.

Gallery Connexion's artist studios provide opportunities for artists to learn and share through informal contact with each other's practice as well as connect with the many exhibitions and activities that make Gallery Connexion an amazing artist-run centre and community hub.  New cafe on site too!

1.  Theatre UNB presents Two OneBAct Plays Nov 30BDec 3

Theatre UNB presents an evening of madness, music and men in suits at Memorial Hall. Two one-act plays will be performed as a double bill from November 30 to December 3: Arthur Kopit’s absurdist tragicomedy Chamber Music and Jean Giraudoux’s satirical fantasy The Apollo of Bellac.
Set in the 1940s, both plays are fascinating tales of self-invention. In Chamber Music, eight institutionalized women believe they are feminist icons such as Amelia Earhart, Gertrude Stein or Joan of Arc. Conspiring to protect the women’s section from attack by the elusive men’s ward, they each reveal their mysterious motives and quirks. Joan’s armour may be rusty and Amelia’s plane now a children’s playground, but in their chaotic struggle to save their lives, what was initially amusing can quickly become terrifying.

The Apollo of Bellac takes a sunnier view of the gender divide, as a shy young woman is taught how to get whatever she wants from any man, be it a job, a dance or a diamond, just by uttering four simple words. Set in Paris, in a fanciful “office of inventions,” Giraudoux’s play is a witty meditation on beauty, power and male vanity. It paints a wry portrait of a corporate world that can be transformed with the right words and a smidgen of charm.

Directed by John Ball, designed by Mike Johnston, and produced and performed by the students of Drama 2170, the production features live music, colourful period costumes and plenty of surprises. The show begins at 8pm, with tickets available at the door for  10 or  6 for students.

It's Christmas in New York, but for two young lovers the prospects are bleak. Will parting with their most precious possession solve their gift-giving dilemma?  What will happen to cheerful bum Soapy's plan for an unusual winter getaway? And with all this hustle and bustle, will newsboy Willy find any warmth and giving in the cold impersonal city?

“O. Henry’s The Gifts of the Magi still has tremendous resonance with a modern audience,” says TNB Artistic Producer Caleb Marshall who directs the production. This heartfelt musical telling of O. Henry’s work is sure to put audiences in the Christmas spirit.”

Playing the couple at the heart of The Gifts of the Magi are Patrick Cook (Jimmy, Chairmaker, TNB 2004) and Jacqueline Thair (Mary, It’s a Wonderful Life, TNB 2009). Veteran New Brunswick character actor Sheldon Davis returns for his fourth TNB production having previously appeared in Kringle’s Window (1996), Jasper Station (2003) and Dear Santa (2003). They are joined by Vaughn Harris, Robert Yeretch and New Brunswick native Martha Farrell (Elaine, The Graduate, TNB 2006).

4.  Fashion Design exhibit Illusion opens Dec 2 at The Gallery

The Gallery at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design is proud to present Illusion, our first two-person alumni exhibition of the 2011-2012 academic year, opening on Friday, December 2 from 4:30-6:30pm.  

Enter a miniature world, accessorized by history, fantasy, and wearable art, for a certain demographic.  Experience crossovers from different eras and movements: Victorian, Steampunk, and burlesque are rolled into a delightful, intriguing and beguiling exhibition.  The Gallery beckons with industrial references: metal, grommets, and chains that dance alongside lace, velvet and Victorian femininity - and masculinity!  This is a show that is sure to surprise and delight.

Accompanying four sets and 14 ensembles, the Gallery space will be enhanced by fashion photography taken throughout the city by Jeff Crawford.

This is a very special exhibition for the Gallery created by two award-winning graduates of the Diploma of Fine Craft, Fashion Design, at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.  Tracy Austin is currently the Fashion Studio technician at NBCCD, and a freelance artist in Fredericton.  Sherry Kinnear is a costume designer, and is Head of Wardrobe with Theatre New Brunswick.

Visitors to the Annual Fashion Catwalk Extravaganza may have seen the intricate offerings of both Kinnear and Austin on the runway, and will again this coming spring as Tracy Austin prepares for her moment in the spotlight in April 2012.  Kinnear has also participated as a designer for the annual Red Dress Gala for The Heart Truth Awareness Campaign for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, most recently in 2011 at the Moncton Casino featuring special guest, Jeannie Beker, an icon in the Canadian Fashion Industry.

The show will continue until January 18, 2012.

5.  Fredericton Society of Artists Holiday Harvest exhibition opens Dec 2

Fredericton Society of Artists presents Holiday Harvest, an exhibition and sale of recent works by Society members.  The exhibition opens at UNB Art Centre on December 2 at 5pm with a public reception.  Holiday Harvest runs until December 18.

The Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9am-4pm and will also be open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5pm during this exhibition.

7.  Cinema Politica presents The)Women)Of)Brukman)Dec 2

Please join us on Friday, December 2 at 7pm at Conserver House, 180 St. John St., Fredericton, for a screening of the 2008 documentary The Women of Brukman, a 52-minute award-winning documentary by Quebec-based director Isaac Isitan about the takeover of factories by workers in Argentina.

During the 2001 economic collapse in Argentina, the seamstresses at Brukman’s clothing factory took over the operation the owners had abandoned.  They reorganized it on a self-management model, without a doubt the most inspiring of the many new economic experiments in that country.  The name Brukman’s went from being a symbol of worker exploitation to being a site of revolutionary labour participation – all workers, no bosses.

8.  Gallery 78 presents three new exhibitions opening Dec 2

Three new exhibitions open at Gallery 78 December 2

William Forrestall’s intricate still life paintings sparkle and hum – like fine crystal.  Forrestall’s egg tempera paintings capture the moment as if the world has stood still.  The atmosphere in these works is as palpable as any of the objects - it glistens and shimmers as it suspends the objects in time as well as space.  No other painter creates and captures stillness with quite the same intensity of “the moment.”  All of this is evident in Forrestall’s newest exhibition New and Familiar.

Kristianne LeBreton’s exhibition Unforgotten speaks to the significance of remembering.  Her urns, created in the spirit of honouring the special elements of life and death and of each individual, show a heartfelt appreciation for life.  Her jewellery, which incorporates found metal objects that may have otherwise been discarded, also speaks to the imbuing of significance we often place in objects.  Unforgotten is LeBreton’s first solo exhibition.  

Christmas Choice comes but once a year!  Gallery 78 presents its ever-popular small works exhibition Christmas Choice beginning December 2.  Many of the gallery’s favoured artists come together once again for a delightful selection of small paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures.

A small (for large thoughts) coptic journal.

In this workshop we’ll learn some basic book making techniques, such as building a book block, finding the grain of paper, piercing, sewing, drilling, designing the perfect cover.

12.  Bel Canto Singers of Fredericton Christmas Concert and Wassail Dec 3

The Bel Canto Singers of Fredericton, under the direction of Anne Sessa, present a concert of moving and beautiful Christmas music in Fredericton on Saturday, December 3.

The Bel Canto Singers, Fredericton’s premiere mixed voice chamber choir, has been delighting audiences for more than 30 years.  In addition to regular performances in Fredericton, they are often invited to perform outside the Fredericton area, most recently Amherst, Nova Scotia, Gagetown, Moncton and Woodstock.

There will be music for everyone; including selections from the Renaissance era, works by Eric Whittaker, Lauridsen and Vaughan Williams plus favourite carols and a seasonal sing-a-long.

The concert will be followed by the Wassail – a time to enjoy seasonal drink and great food provided by choir members.

Anne brings to the choir, her vast experience in choral performance. Anne was the founder / conductor of the Bower Hill Chorale which was often accompanied by the Pittsburgh Symphony.  She conducted the Seaglass Chorale, the Southern Maine Chorale and most recently the Greater Moncton Chorale.  Anne also works with the NB Choral Federation as a conductor and soloist.

Kathy Mac’s books of poems are The Hundefräulein Papers (2009) and Nail Builders Plan for Strength and Growth (2002), a finalist for the Governor General’s Award and winner of the Lampert Award.  In 2006, she received a SSHRC grant to marry her creative and analytical skills in a series of long poems on contemporary culture.  Neither side has sued for divorce, though they went through a lot of counselling. The children are beautiful, if wild; some of them will be published by Wolsack and Wynn in late 2012 in Romance, Porn, Pain and Complicity, which is billed as a collection of Cultural Studies essays.  Mac teaches Creative Writing and Women Writers at STU, where she is chair of the English Department.

Born in North Battleford, Robert Shiplett studied philosophy and psychology in both Saskatchewan and Montreal.  Working in both Canada and the US, he has lectured as a sessional, interned as a psychologist, developed software, and taught ESL and special-needs students.  He moved to Fredericton in 2009, where he is a poet, blogger, astronomer, and occasional Go player with more telescopes than guitars.  Interested in poetry and science without certainties, Shiplett’s poems draw on the flora of many regions; recent historical events; and multi-lingual sources in poetry, poesis and poetics (French, German, Russian and other).  www.logiquewerks.com | www.aule-browser.com

17.  Interactive Songwriters’ Circle Whose)Song)Is)It)Anyway? Dec 4

Whose Song Is It Anyway? is an interactive songwriters’ circle…turned inside out! This unique new show features acclaimed East Coast artists Chris Kirby (NL), Kim Wempe (NS), Tim Chaisson (PEI) and Andy Brown (NB).  Each artist will perform several recognizable songs…written by the other artists on stage.  The original story of the song will come from the original artist, but the focus will quickly become how that song affects the other artists.

Not only does this format give the audience a different perspective on the music they love, it also sheds a new light for the artists themselves – on their own songs! The learning process continues on stage for these songwriters, new versions of certain songs may emerge, and new collaborations are sure to surface – right in front of their fans.  It also gives the artists an occasion to visibly appreciate each other and their music, which the audience will no doubt find charming and endearing.

Let’s celebrate our East Coast artists – and let them celebrate each other!

20.  Dance Fredericton presents The)Nutcracker at the Playhouse Dec 7

Presented by Dance Fredericton and featuring guest artists Emily Grizzell and Yosuke Mino, soloist dancers with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The Nutcracker is a full-length ballet that showcases original choreography created for Dance Fredericton, elaborate costuming, and the classical score by Tchaikovsky.

This fairy tale ballet opens with the festive Victorian party scene on Christmas Eve in the Stahlbaum home and later follows Clara and the Nutcracker Prince on their journey to the Land of the Sweets.  In the Magical Kingdom they are feted with delightful dances from around the world, including the stunningly beautiful pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.  This timeless classic will delight audiences of all ages.

The 22nd  Annual Advent Carol Festival held each year at St. Paul’s United Church (corner George and York) will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:30pm.  Thirteen church and community choirs will present a program of new, as well as familiar, Christmas music.

22.  STU Jazz Concert Dec 7

STU Jazz presents its first concert of the year on Wednesday evening, December 7 at 7:30pm in Kinsella Auditorium located in McCain Hall on the St. Thomas University campus.  Come and hear this exciting jazz ensemble perform some familiar and new jazz arrangements.

23.  UNB Chorale, UNB Concert Band and UNB Strings perform Dec 7

A night of musical diversity awaits you as the UNB Chorale and UNB Concert Band, directed by Björn Runefors, present their Annual Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:30pm, Memorial Hall, UNB Fredericton.  Special guests this year are UNB Strings, under the direction of Jackson Wo.

25.  Fredericton Choral Society and choirs perform 100Bvoice chorus of Handel’s Messiah Dec 11

On Sunday, December 11, Fredericton Choral Society presents Handel's Messiah in a performance that will be more dramatic than ever.  The Fredericton Choral Society, Sussex Choral Society and Bethany Singers together form a 100-voice choir. With the Fredericton Chamber Orchestra they'll make the rafters ring at a venue new to FCS: Sunset Church on Clements Drive. And, for the first time in New Brunswick, a countertenor will perform the beloved alto solos.

Bjorn Runefors, director of the Fredericton Choral Society, will conduct the choir and orchestra. Sarah Hallyburton, the soprano soloist, performs extensively and teaches voice in Sussex. Andrew Pickett, countertenor, has performed in Britain, France and Canada, and is delighted to be singing in his home province. Owen McCausland, the tenor soloist, graduated from Saint John High School, and is finishing his third year of a vocal performance degree at Dalhousie University. David Steeves, an outstanding bass soloist, teaches voice and is director of the Sussex Choral Society.

The concert will end with a sing-along repeat of the Hallelujah chorus, a wonderful way to end what promises to be a very special evening.

Lonely? Cramped for space?  Gallery Connexion rents studio space to artists for the creation, production, and sharing of deas among different disciplines. There are presently two (2) artist studios/office spaces available for rent in Gallery Connexion.  The spaces average 170 square feet in size.  The monthly rental fee is  200, heat and lights included, with access to a shared tool room and a/v equipment.  24-hour access with a wheelchair accessible entrance by request. All studio rentals require a yearly lease.

Gallery Connexion's artist studios provide opportunities for artists to learn and share through informal contact with each other's practice as well as connect with the many exhibitions and activities that make Gallery Connexion an amazing artist-run centre and community hub.  New cafe on site too!

1. Herménégilde Chiasson exhibit Identities opens at The Yellow Box Gallery Nov 24

The Yellow Box Gallery in McCain Hall on St. Thomas University campus will feature an exhibition by New Brunswick artist Herménégilde Chiasson opening on Thursday November 24. The exhibition will open with a public lecture and launch beginning at 4pm in McCain Hall, Room 101, followed by the exhibit opening at 5pm in the Yellow Box Gallery.

Entitled Identities, the exhibit is comprised of eight works featuring a collection of prints created from altering advertisements and magazine covers during Chiasson’s studies in Paris in the 1980s.

“This work is part of my lifetime interest in print making, starting with intaglio and moving into silkscreen and now wood block cutting,” Chiasson says. “It is also part of my conceptual activity which lasted for quite a long time until I got interested in the object again. There is not much left from that period of mine outside of a few photographs. This is why these images are both a nostalgic memento of my formative years and a testimony to my belief that art needs a solid support to survive time.”

Art confronted to its excesses, identity is central in much of Chiasson’s work and is the main feature of the exhibit through self-portraits in each piece. Without the use of computers or editing software, Chiasson created these “fake documents” to make them look as authentic as the originals.

Chiasson served as Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick from 2003 to 2009. He lives in Grand Barachois and is a professor of art history at the Université de Moncton..

2.  Live at the Joyce with the Richard Page Nov 24

Each Thursday, the James Joyce Pub will be offering free live music in Blues, Jazz, Contemporary, Celtic etc. On Thursday, November 24 from 6-9pm, join Ottawa saxophonist Richard Page. Richard studied jazz at Mohawk College where he was awarded the Noreen and Phil Nimmons Memorial Scholarship twice, in 2005 and 2007.

Between 2004 and 2008, Richard was a member of the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band where he quickly became one of the All Star’s featured soloists. In July 2007, the All Stars undertook a three-week European tour, appearing at the Vienne Jazz Festival in France and the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

Throughout his career, Richard has performed with many of North America’s top jazz artists including JUNO award winner David Braid, among many others. Richard will be joined by Nova Scotia jazz guitarist Amy Brandon.

3. The Art of Looking at Art public talk by Terry Graff Nov 24

You are cordially invited to attend a talk by Terry Graff, Curator of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, on the topic The Art of Looking at Art at Government House on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 7pm. The talk, which is open to the public at no charge, will focus on what the viewer can bring to the experience of looking at artwork.

5. Stan Carew and The Magpies bring music and stories to the Fredericton Playhouse Nov 24

Stan Carew, the host of CBC Radio's Weekend Mornings, will be performing on Thursday, November 24 at 7:30pm alongside his band The Magpies in an evening full of eclectic songs and stories at The Fredericton Playhouse.

Carew – who has the highest audience share of any program produced by the CBC, and listeners in many parts of the world – is also a songwriter who performs regularly with The Magpies and UK duo Breeze and Wilson, with whom he's made two albums.

Playing guitar and singing lead vocals, Carew is accompanied instrumentally and on backup vocals by The Magpies: Richard King on guitar, John Sayre on keyboard, Rick Jones on bass, and Steve Brown on guitar.

6. NBSME Festival closing celebration Nov 24

7. Cinema Politica presents DetermiNATION Nov 25

Paul Rickard and Michelle Smith direct this recent documentary 2009 about three young Aboriginal artists -Samian, Cheri Maracle and CerAmony- who use voice, rhythms, samples and guitar riffs to cut through big 'P' politics in order to reveal a vibrant Aboriginal music scene while exposing the realities and struggles in their communities.

As resistance grows across Aboriginal lands, this film about music, art and politics pulls Aboriginal stories from the back pages and puts them squarely at the front of the stage. This free screening is also a Native Awareness Day event co-hosted by the St. Thomas University Native Student Council. All Cinema Politica films are followed by discussion. Donations are accepted.

8. Comic couple The Funny Ones will keep you in stitches at the Playhouse Nov 25

The Fredericton Playhouse will be bursting with laughter on Friday, November 25 when one of Canada’s favourite comedy duos hits the stage with an arsenal of over two decades of their greatest hits. The Funny Ones is the latest live comedy offering from Jenny Parsons and Steve Morel, two professional comedians who have become proficient in the art of being silly together in life and in love.

The Funny Ones is about their real-life relationship; about being husband and wife while doing comedy for a living, and the comedians who have inspired them along the way: Lucy & Ricky, Burns & Allen, and even Palin & Bush. It’s like stand-up with songs, but WAY cooler. When Jenny and Steve moved to the countryside four years ago, they met the “raw milk farmer,” the “mushroom guy” and the “couple who grew the garlic.” As professional comedians, and who were new to the area, they soon became known as “the funny ones.” And so a title for their latest touring show was born.

9. New Brunswick College of Craft & Design Annual Craft Sale and Open House Nov 25S26

The New Brunswick College of Craft & Design is hosting its Annual Craft Sale and Open House. Fiber Arts, Ceramic, Jewellery and Metal Art are some of the studios that will have their work represented. Unique production lines and one of a kind pieces will be for sale.

Featuring a fantastic multi generational cast, B.O.P's first production in Fredericton tells the story of wealthy businessman John Dale, who hasn't enjoyed a "real Christmas" for years. So, on the spur of the moment, he decides to "rent" a Christmas from Anne Weston, who owns the local rent shop. Anne is at first flustered with the requirements: a tree with presents, Christmas carols and also a wife and five children. Anne feels she has solved the problem of a Christmas family by calling the actors' guild. But the young actors come down with the measles so she turns to the local orphanage. When the guild can't locate a "mother," Anne steps in to play the role herself.

Based on the short story by J. Lillian Vandervere, the story of how John Dale’s rented Christmas turns into a new life for all concerned makes this a warm story for the holiday season.

B.O.P will be hosting a silent auction during show times to supplement the cost of tickets for those who could not otherwise have access to the theatre.

11. Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas at the Fredericton Playhouse Nov 26

Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas recreates the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a farmhouse in the remote parish of Teampall an Ghleanntain in the west of Ireland. On November 26 at 7:30pm, visit the Fredericton Playhouse and watch as the neighbours gather around the fire to grace the long wintry night with the laughter of their stories, the joy of their music, and the dances they always said they were much too old for.

This year, Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas features Marcus Donnelly from Co. Galway, one of the most exhilarating, truly creative Irish dancers performing today. Internationally acclaimed master of the steel-string guitar William Coulter joins in, along with vocalist and multi-instrumentalist and world-champion level Irish dancer Marianne Knight from Co. Mayo, and Brian Bigley also a world-champion level Irish dancer on uilleann pipes, whistles and flute.

Here, Gleeson stars as Sergeant Gerry Boyle, an unconventional small-town cop on the West Coast of Ireland. It's a far cry from the busy streets of Dublin, and in this removed and quiet town, Gerry is far more concerned with the needs of his ailing
mother a lovely turn from Fionnula Flanagan, Transamerica, Waking Ned Devine than small-town crime. However, when a local murder appears to have connections to a gang of international drug traffickers, Boyle is forced to team up with FBI Agent Everett Don Cheadle, Crash, Hotel Rwanda . Initially, Gerry’s bigoted ways and laidback habits rub his visiting partner the wrong way, but the two men gradually form a grudging alliance.

A fresh spin on the buddy/cop formula, The Guard has a lot of fun with cop movie clichés – most notably the sergeant’s constant digs at American cops and cop shows – and Gleeson and Cheadle shine onscreen, with McDonagh making the most of their battling and banter. Gleeson is fantastic as Boyle, relishing every line and balancing his physical heft with a delicate touch for comedy, while Cheadle proves an excellent comic foil. The Guard will leave you smiling.

16. Rooted/uprooted and Miramichi 1953 open in Annex Gallery Nov 29

Rooted/uprooted and Miramichi 1953 in the Playhouse Annex Gallery November 29 – January 16, 2012.

Gallery Connexion’s Annex Gallery invites you to the opening reception of Rooted/uprooted by Linda Kelly and Miramichi 1953 by Rachael Flett at the Playhouse at 686 Queen Street on Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 5-6:45pm. Both exhibitions run until January 16, 2012.

Rooted/uprooted is a selection of drawings by Linda Kelly that depict trees from the area close to her home in Fredericton.
The aged maples are on her family farm and predate her grandfather. The elms are nearer to her home and, though much younger, recently succumbed to the elm disease that has spread outward from city center over the past several years.

“I think we all share a love for the presence and companionship of trees,” Kelly said.

Miramichi 1953 is a collection of photographs by Rachael Flett using black and white film initially created with images of women from the 1950’s. The negatives were hand-processed in a traditional darkroom. Rachael began experimenting by shooting different models in various settings.

The Annex Gallery is an initiative between Gallery Connexion and the Fredericton Playhouse to provide a juried exhibition space for Gallery Connexion members and for the Playhouse to include programmed exhibitions in its galleries.

Anyone who knows anything at all about opera knows something about Carmen. It has been called the perfect opera, and there is much justification for this accolade. There is not an ounce of fat or padding in this opera - every number, every moment is essential, telling, crucial, perfectly set. Tchaikovsky proclaimed Carmen “a masterpiece in every sense of the word” and predicted – correctly, as it turned out – that it would become the world’s most popular opera. In Paris, by 1904 29 years after its premiere there , it had seen one thousand performances, and by 1938 Bizet’s centennial year , the city had chalked up its second thousand.

18. Theatre UNB presents Two One-Act Plays Nov 30 - Dec 3

As a double bill from November 30 to December 3 at UNB Fredericton's Memorial Hall: Arthur Kopit’s absurdist tragicomedy Chamber Music and Jean Giraudoux’s satirical fantasy The Apollo of Bellac.

Set in the 1940s, both plays are fascinating tales of self-invention. In Chamber Music, eight institutionalized women believe they are feminist icons such as Amelia Earhart, Gertrude Stein or Joan of Arc. Conspiring to protect the women’s section from attack by the elusive men’s ward, they each reveal their mysterious motives and quirks. Joan’s armour may be rusty and Amelia’s plane now a children’s playground, but in their chaotic struggle to save their lives, what was initially amusing can quickly become terrifying.

The Apollo of Bellac takes a sunnier view of the gender divide, as a shy young woman is taught how to get whatever she wants from any man, be it a job, a dance or a diamond, just by uttering four simple words. Set in Paris, in a fanciful “office of inventions,” Giraudoux’s play is a witty meditation on beauty, power and male vanity. It paints a wry portrait of a corporate world that can be transformed with the right words and a smidgen of charm. [cp: La Folle de Chaillot / The maswoman of Chaillot and oil prospectors in Paris ]

Directed by John Ball, designed by Mike Johnston, and produced and performed by the students of Drama 2170, the production features live music, colourful period costumes and plenty of surprises. The show begins at 8pm, with tickets available at the door for 10 or 6 for students.

19. TNB presents The Gifts of the Magi Dec 1-4 at the Fredericton Playhouse

It's Christmas in New York, but for two young lovers the prospects are bleak. Will parting with their most precious possession solve their gift-giving dilemma? What will happen to cheerful bum Soapy's plan for an unusual winter getaway? And with all this hustle and bustle, will newsboy Willy find any warmth and giving in the cold impersonal city?

“O. Henry’s The Gifts of the Magi still has tremendous resonance with a modern audience,” says TNB Artistic Producer Caleb Marshall who directs the production. This heartfelt musical telling of O. Henry’s work is sure to put audiences in the Christmas spirit.”

Playing the couple at the heart of The Gifts of the Magi are Patrick Cook Jimmy, Chairmaker, TNB 2004 and Jacqueline Thair Mary, It’s a Wonderful Life, TNB 2009 . Veteran New Brunswick character actor Sheldon Davis returns for his fourth TNB production having previously appeared in Kringle’s Window 1996 , Jasper Station 2003 and Dear Santa 2003 . They are joined by Vaughn Harris, Robert Yeretch and New Brunswick native Martha Farrell Elaine, The Graduate, TNB 2006 .

21. Fashion Design exhibit Illusion opens Dec 2 at The Gallery

The Gallery at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design is proud to present Illusion, our first two-person alumni exhibition of the 2011-2012 academic year, opening on Friday, December 2 from 4:30-6:30pm.

Enter a miniature world, accessorized by history, fantasy, and wearable art, for a certain demographic. Experience crossovers from different eras and movements: Victorian, Steampunk, and burlesque are rolled into a delightful, intriguing and beguiling exhibition. The Gallery beckons with industrial references: metal, grommets, and chains, that dance alongside lace, velvet and Victorian femininity - and masculinity This is a show that is sure to surprise and delight.

Accompanying four sets and 14 ensembles, the Gallery space will be enhanced by fashion photography taken throughout the city by Jeff Crawford.

This is a very special exhibition for the Gallery created by two award-winning graduates of the Diploma of Fine Craft, Fashion Design, at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Tracy Austin is currently the Fashion Studio technician at NBCCD, and a freelance artist in Fredericton. Sherry Kinnear is a costume designer, and is Head of Wardrobe with Theatre New Brunswick.

 Visitors to the Annual Fashion Catwalk Extravaganza may have seen the intricate offerings of both Kinnear and Austin on the runway, and will again this coming spring as Tracy Austin prepares for her moment in the spotlight, in April 2012. Kinnear has also participated as a designer for the annual Red Dress Gala for The Heart Truth Awareness Campaign for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, most recently in 2011 at the Moncton Casino featuring special guest, Jeannie Beker, an icon in the Canadian Fashion Industry.

The show will continue until January 18, 2012.

22. Fredericton Society of Artists Holiday Harvest exhibition opens Dec 2

Fredericton Society of Artists presents Holiday Harvest, an exhibition and sale of recent works by Society members. The exhibition opens at UNB Art Centre on December 2 at 5pm with a public reception. Holiday Harvest runs until December 18.

The Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9am-4pm and will also be open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5pm during this exhibition.

25. Book Binding 101 with Denise Rowe Dec 3 at Memorial Hall

A small for large thoughts coptic journal.

In this workshop we’ll learn some basic book making techniques, such as building a book block, finding the grain of paper, piercing, sewing, drilling, designing the perfect cover.

26. Bel Canto Singers of Fredericton Christmas Concert and Wassail Dec 3

The Bel Canto Singers of Fredericton, under the direction of Anne Sessa, present a concert of moving and beautiful Christmas music in Fredericton on Saturday, December 3.

The Bel Canto Singers, Fredericton’s premiere mixed voice chamber choir, has been delighting audiences for more than 30 years. In addition to regular performances in Fredericton, they are often invited to perform outside the Fredericton area, most recently Amherst, Nova Scotia, Gagetown, Moncton and Woodstock.

There will be music for everyone; including selections from the Renaissance era, works by Eric Whittaker, Lauridsen and Vaughan Williams plus favourite carols and a seasonal sing-a-long.

The concert will be followed by the Wassail - a time to enjoy seasonal drink and great food provided by choir members

Anne brings to the choir, her vast experience in choral performance. Anne was the founder / conductor of the Bower Hill Chorale which was often accompanied by the Pittsburgh Symphony. She conducted the Seaglass Chorale, the Southern Maine Chorale and most recently the Greater Moncton Chorale. Anne also works with the NB Choral Federation as a conductor and soloist.

28. Interactive Songwriters’ Circle Whose Song Is It Anyway? Dec 4

Whose Song Is It Anyway? is an interactive songwriters’ circle…turned inside out This unique new show features acclaimed East Coast artists Chris Kirby NL , Kim Wempe NS , Tim Chaisson PEI and Andy Brown NB . Each artist will perform several recognizable songs…written by the other artists on stage. The original story of the song will come from the original artist, but the focus will quickly become how that song affects the other artists.

Not only does this format give the audience a different perspective on the music they love, it also sheds a new light for the artists themselves – on their own songs The learning process continues on stage for these songwriters, new versions of certain songs may emerge, and new collaborations are sure to surface – right in front of their fans. It also gives the artists an occasion to visibly appreciate each other and their music, which the audience will no doubt find charming and endearing.

30. Dance Fredericton presents The Nutcracker at the Playhouse Dec 7

Presented by Dance Fredericton and featuring guest artists Emily Grizzell and Yosuke Mino, Soloist Dancers with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The Nutcracker is a full-length ballet that showcases original choreography created for Dance Fredericton, elaborate costuming and the classical score by Tchaikovsky.

This fairy tale ballet opens with the festive Victorian party scene on Christmas Eve in the Stahlbaum home and later follows Clara and the Nutcracker Prince on their journey to the Land of the Sweets. In the Magical Kingdom they are feted with delightful dances from around the world, including the stunningly beautiful pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. This timeless classic will delight audiences of all ages.

1. New Brunswick Art Bank call for submissions Dec 9 deadline

The New Brunswick Art Bank is inviting submissions from New Brunswick visual artists for the 2011-2012 Acquisitions Program.

The Acquisitions Program purchases contemporary works of art by New Brunswick visual artists for display in government buildings. Every two years, a jury of artists and art professionals selects artwork to be purchased.

Artists who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants who have resided in New Brunswick for 12 consecutive months prior to the application deadline and who pay personal income taxes in New Brunswick are eligible to apply for the program.
Artwork must have been produced during the past two years between January 2009 and November 2011 and must be suitable for display in government buildings.

The extended deadline to receive submissions is December 9, 2011. Application forms and guidelines are available at http://www.gnb.ca/0131/art_bank-e.asp#1.

2. Call For Tender: Northrop Frye Bronze Statue

The Frye Festival Canada’s only bilingual, international literary Festival and Atlantic Canada’s largest literary happening is now accepting tenders for the production of a three-dimensional life-size bronze sculpture of Northrop Frye. This sculpture is to be representational and feature Northrop Frye, sitting on a park bench, reading a book. The sculpture must be completed, delivered and installed no later than July 7, 2012 at the Moncton Public Library Downing Street entrance , Moncton, NB.

3. Sculpture Saint John – Call to Artists

The Board of Directors of the New Brunswick International Sculpture Symposium is putting forth an international call to artists to create sculptures for public art. Six sculptors will be creating works of art from ten ton pieces of New Brunswick granite on the Saint John Waterfront. “Sculpture Saint John” will take place in Saint John, New Brunswick from August 2 - September 15, 2012.

The deadline for entry in “Sculpture Saint John” is January 10, 2012.

This international sculpture symposium will be the first for New Brunswick and for Atlantic Canada. It promises to be an exciting event. Diana Alexander, Chair of Sculpture Saint John, said, “The Sculpture Saint John team; the City of Saint John; towns of Rothesay, Quispamsis, St. George, Grand Bay-Westfield; and UNBSJ are pleased to offer this opportunity for artists from around the world to experience our city, our culture and our hospitality. Their finished work then becomes a new and permanent part of the landscape of those communities”.

4. GENERATION ART… IMAGINE

The Michaëlle Jean Foundation and EQ3 have partnered to provide a national platform for young Canadians to express themselves on social issues, to share their creative vision of a better community with all Canadians, and to acquire mentors, industry contacts and transferable artistic and entrepreneurial skills.

What it involves
A nationwide contest: Creative young people, aged 15 to 30, are invited to design and submit original artwork by January 10, 2012 around the theme “Imagine…. a Better Community” to generationart@eq3.com. Winning entries will be selected by region and become part of a limited edition Generation Art product line available for sale at EQ3 stores across Canada in the spring of 2012. One hundred per cent of the proceeds raised will be reinvested in youth initiatives, through the Michaëlle
Jean Foundation. Winners will be awarded the Generation Art product featuring their winning design, a 200 EQ3 gift certificate and have the opportunity to spend individual time with EQ3 consultants

Exhibits and Blogs: To raise awareness about issues of concern to all young Canadians, Generation Art will provide a variety of platforms where participants’ creativity will be displayed. A virtual exhibit will be unveiled on FMJF’s website, www.fmjf.ca, showcasing the creative vision of a better Canada of all participants. Video commentary and blogs featuring young Canadians taking on social issues and solutions will also be available. The exhibit, blogs and video messages will provide a rich tapestry of artwork and perspectives that showcase the unique contribution young people can make to a better Canada.

Workshops and Mentorship: EQ3 will welcome young Canadians to a series of three workshops focussed on working as a team to create art reflecting the project’s theme, creativity in the world of industrial design, and selling and marketing artwork.

Those unable to attend the workshops in person will be able to participate virtually through online videos. During all stages of the workshops, seasoned industrial design professionals will be on hand to provide mentorship support for participants.

5. Call for proposals – Charlotte Street Arts Centre

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre is seeking proposals for the Charlotte Glencross Gallery.

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre “opens the doors of creative expression to all,” and invites professional artists, emerging artists, multicultural artists and amateur artists, as well as students to apply.

The selections committee will meet to review the proposals after the submission deadline: January 13, 2012. Applicants will be considered for exhibitions beginning May 2012 through to 2013.

Requirements:
• A 250-word artist statement/ proposal for exhibition
• An arts CV max 3 pages or biography
• 10 images of work JPEGS on a CD with accompanying image list that specifies titles of work, media used and dimensions of work

6. Theatre New Brunswick to partner with NotaBle Acts on new play development

Theatre New Brunswick and NotaBle Acts are calling on emerging and established New Brunswick playwrights to submit their one-act plays for New Voices. This province-wide call for short plays offers playwrights the opportunity to have their New Brunswick stories professionally produced as Opening Acts on the TNB Main Stage in the 2012-13 season.

Submissions must be based on a true New Brunswick story past or present. They may incorporate intimate and domestic themes or subjects large in historic scope. Submission deadline is January 15, 2012
