New Exhibition at Connexion Subverts Stereotypes of Gender and Sex
Work opens Jan 12
Gallery Connexion is pleased to announce the opening reception of Nathalie Daoust’s Tokyo Hotel Story on Thursday, January 12 at 7pm.
Nathalie Daoust's Tokyo Hotel Story is a series of photographs exploring female sexuality and the subversion of gender stereotypes. After spending several months in Alpha, one of the biggest S&M "love hotels" in Japan, Daoust photographed 39 women of all ages in their private rooms, surrounded by the specialist equipment and dressed in the regalia that helps define their trade of Dominatrix. The exhibition will feature some photographs in 3D.
Daoust’s goal is to provide insight into the concept of women as dominant beings. She believes numerous challenges still exist in terms of confronting deep-rooted stereotypes of gender-roles, not only in Japan, but the world as well.
Daoust will give an artist talk at Gallery Connexion on January 14 at 2pm. Salon Connex, an open forum critical discussion about the work, will be held February 26 at the Charlotte Street Art Centre.
The exhibition runs until March 2.
Gallery Connexion is Fredericton’s only artist-run-centre. Located at 440 York St in the Chestnut Complex, Gallery Connexion’s mandate is to present controversial and thought provoking contemporary artwork to the Fredericton community.
Gallery Connexion is open Tuesday to Friday, noon until 6 and Saturday, noon until 4. Admission is free.

Art in Action
Friday, January 13, 7pm
An abundance of art, love, and idealism: that’s what fuels Annie Roy and Pierre Allard, the founders of l’Action Terroriste Socialement Acceptable.
For the past decade, ATSA has made performance an act of intervention, an art that engages citizens in the struggle for a humane and civil society. Magnus Isacsson homes his camera on the political idealism and domestic demands of the Roy-Allard partnership and finds inspiration, generosity and integrity in their exemplary life project. A powerful, moving and candid documentary that makes you believe in a better tomorrow.
Co-host: Gallery Connexion.

Canadian soprano Marie‐Josèe Lord blends classical and popular music Jan 13 at the Playhouse
Jambalaya—a surprising title indeed, but to surprise the audience is what this concert is all about. With her own personal style, her voice, her presence, and her choice of repertoire, Marie-Josée Lord delivers a stunning recital where classical and popular music are gently entwined. Gordon Lightfoot, Verdi, Lama, Bizet, Joni Mitchell and many other composers make up this special program that flows ever so naturally from this brilliant, award-winning Canadian soprano. Lord will share this and more at The Fredericton Playhouse on Friday, January 13 at 7:30pm.
Lord made her professional debut in the fall of 2003, singing Liù in Puccini’s Turandot at the Opéra de Québec. In February 2004, Montreal music lovers were enraptured by her rendition of Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème at the Opéra de Montréal, where she then sang the title role of Puccini’s Suor Angelica in September 2006, confirming her formidable acting talent and deep musical sensitivity.
Recently Lord has been heard as Marie-Jeanne in the world premiere of the operatic version of the celebrated musical Starmania (Plamondon/Berger) at the Opéra de Québec in May 2008, and the Opéra de Montréal in March 2009. And in the early fall of 2009, she brilliantly sang the role of Nedda (I Paggliacci) at the Opéra de Montréal.
Tickets for Marie-Josée Lord’s Jambalaya are available at the Fredericton Playhouse box office 1-866-884-5800, or online at www.theplayhouse.ca.

Crime Scen-E -Mixed-Media Exhibition opens at Gallery Connexion Jan 14
Crime Scen-E - Mixed Media Exhibition. Presented by Josephine L. Savarese
January 14-24, 2012
Gallery Connexion, 440 York Street, Fredericton
Crime Scen-E makes prominent and bears witness to the emotional residue of crime that seeps beyond the cordoned off spaces that are created to contain and preserve evidence. The mixed media images call into question attempts to create literal and figurative borders around crime scenes, suggesting that the harmful events can be contained in one geographic area. The images stand for the emotional spillage that over-runs the crime scene. They symbolize the trauma of victimization as well as the potential for reconciliation.
Through the application of arts based visual qualitative methodologies, the exhibition seeks to empower victims by recognizing their need for respect and healing without supporting the broader discourses of prison-ization.
Bio:
Josephine L. Savarese studied Fine Arts for two years at the University of Saskatchewan before going on to complete studies in Sociology and Law. More recently, she completed courses in Mixed Media through the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.
She has been integrating cultural and criminal justice studies since 2002 when she joined a faculty at the University of Regina and joined the board of Commonweal Community Arts, Inc., a Saskatchewan based organization promoting community-based art with marginalized populations.

Five years after his impressive ensemble biopic Bobby, actor-director Emilio Estevez returns with another ambitious drama that also features his father, Martin Sheen. Debuting at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival®, The Way is a touching film about the testy yet unbreakable bond between father and son, as well as the supportive, familial connections that can form among strangers.
Tom (Sheen, Bobby, The Departed), an American ophthalmologist, is informed that his son (Estevez) has been killed in a freak accident on a pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James, in the northwest of Spain. Upon arriving in France to collect his son’s remains and return to the United States, Tom is hit with a profound sense of sadness and quickly changes his plans. Equipped with his deceased son’s guidebook and backpack, he embarks on the 800 km pilgrimage from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in an attempt to honour his son’s memory by finishing what he had started.
Set against gorgeous vistas of France and Spain, The Way, like all great road trip movies, depicts how travelling through an unknown land can lead to greater self-knowledge and understanding

Gallery Connexion’s Annex Gallery invites you to the opening reception of Vibrant Reflections by Kris LeBlanc on Friday January 20, 2012 at the Playhouse from 5-6:45 pm.
Vibrant Reflections is a selection of paintings by Kris LeBlanc largely inspired by his time spent living in western Canada.
“Driving into the Okanagan Valley, the beauty of the lakes, the vegetation and the rocky mountains are truly indescribable,” LeBlanc said. “I felt an amazing sense of freedom being surrounded by such beautiful scenery. I try to express these feelings though my art.”
LeBlanc is a native of Moncton but spent most of his youth in Fredericton. He has always enjoyed being creative but found his life’s passion in 2009 when he decided to give painting a try.
LeBlanc’s work has been featured in other Fredericton locations such as Endeavour’s, Klub Soda Hair Salon, Isaac’s Way and The Palate.
The exhibition will run until February 28.
The Annex Gallery is an initiative between Gallery Connexion and the Fredericton Playhouse to provide a juried exhibition space for Gallery Connexion members. Located at 686 Queen Street, the Fredericton Playhouse has provided a professional venue for the performing arts in Fredericton since 1964.
